For 20 years the Coed Cymru Partnership has actively promoted the use of unseasoned oak and sweet chestnut in a wide range of standard and bespoke countryside furniture for the following reasons:-
- These products use a variety of sizes and grades of components minimising waste
- The timbers are naturally durable. No treatment is necessary so that at the end of its service life the product is not "hazardous waste"
- The demand for raw materials has significantly increased the value of these timbers to growers in Wales.
Public bodies and individuals can see their ethical/local purchasing decisions providing direct incentive for woodland management.
- Local businesses benefit. We now have over 100 small sawmills in Wales. Details of local suppliers are available
from Coed cymru.
- The use of tropical harwoods has been significantly reduced.
Coed Cymru can provide information on traditional uses and designs including:-
Gates, stiles and waymarkers, picnic furniture and landscaping products.
