The Ty Unnos system looks to incorporate the following aims,
Primarily to add value to Welsh timber to encourage the continued maintenance and gradual regeneration of indigenous Welsh forests.
A system which draws from local supply chains, taking locally sourced and readily available standard resources without the requirement for significant additional processing
To utilise appropriate technology for for self or assisted build which can be adopted by the existing industry network of local sawmills without great capital investment or highly specific skill levels
A simplified, standardised kit of components including building envelope, furniture, fittings and fixtures which are dimensionally coordinated and can be prefabricated and efficiently site assembled on potentially challenging sites.
An appropriate sustainable response to the challenging demand for affordable housing in the diverse landscape and cultural context of Wales
Adaptable to use a variety of different grade and species of softwood.
A system which addresses the challenge of zero carbon construction by 2012 through the use of highly sustainable materials and construction methods and highly efficient thermal properties
Sitka spruce housing is based on a 600mm module for constructional flexibility.
Using standard timber sizes produced by local sawmills, Sitka spruce box beams are prefabricated to form a structural portal frame, and pre-insulated panels for walls, floors and roofs. These frames and panels create a series of modular rooms varying in size from 1.2m x 3m to 4.8m x 3m or from entrance lobby to small bedroom to kitchen to living room. This enables a variety of house types to be generated on different sites, with potential to add modules as the requirements of the house evolve over time.
