OBJECTIVES AND TARGETS

CYMRAEG

INTRODUCTION

Big Oak Tree Coed Cymru began as a campaigning body to heighten awareness of native woodlands, particularly among the farming community who own most of these woodlands. In 1986 a network of woodland advisors was established, based in County Council and National Park offices. The Coed Cymru Central office at Tregynon provides the communication, technical and administrative support necessary to maintain the cohesion of the organisation.

Four clear roles have emerged for Coed Cymru:

  • As a provider of free and impartial help, advice and training;
  • To promote co-operation between woodland owners, woodland contractors and timber users
  • To develop hardwood timber products and markets to ensure that broadleaf woodlands have a firm economic base which will ensure their continued management.
  • To be an advocate for broadleaf woodland in Wales and to act as a catalyst to bring about environmental, economic and social benefits through sustainable woodland management.
THE VISION

Closer integration of Forestry, Farming and Wood use
    Trees
  • Greater use of woodlands for recreation;
  • Greater economic and biological diversity the result of sustainable silvicultural systems;
  • Optimum use of harvested materials in the local economy
  • Reduced dependence on imported hardwoods
  • A real understanding of the social, commercial and environmental importance of woodlands in Wales.
REALISING THE VISION

Rebuilding a tradition based on research and development, continued technical support and education and training. It is a sustained campaign to ingrain a woodland tradition into the social and commercial life of Wales.
