The Ty Unnos project has now entered a development period utilising a series of real design projects to test, develop and refine the system and consider parameters such as economic and environmental performance. These projects will be realised by the end of 2008 and will offer a wide range of learning outcomes to aid in the development and refinement of a commercially applicable construction system.
Ebbw Vale Environment Research Centre
Sited within an area of ecological interest surrounding the pumphouse and drainage basins of the former Ebbw Vale Steelworks, the proposal offers classroom facilities for 30 people, an office and kitchen area and toilet facilities.
A number of elements will come under the spotlight such as the affordability under a constrained budget, the structural performance of the portal frame, the buildability of the construction system and speed at which it can be constructed. The limitations of the site will emphasise the importance of off-site manufacturing. Importance will also be placed on the need for low-cost durable and robust finishes both internally and externally.
Rural Studio - Tregynon
This project will act as a showcase for Welsh timber products and projects developed by Coed Cymru and their project partners, therefore elements such as windows, cladding and flooring finishes will be developed and integrated into the system. It will be situated on the grounds of the Coed Cymru head office at the Old Sawmill, Tregynon and will be a small unit offering a satellite workshop for the Design Research Unit as well as providing Coed Cymru with a demountable exhibition unit. This project is funded by Countryside Council for Wales and will primarily act as a prototype unit to allow the hands-on development of construction methods and detailing.
Smithsonian Festival - Washington
In July 2009 Wales was the featured nation at the Smithsonian Folk Life Festival on the Mall in Washington DC and Coed Cymru was invited to exhibit a Ty Unnos as part of the Wales exhibit for the ten days of the festival. This building was constructed in a factory unit belonging to Elements Europe and shipped to Washington by container.

Royal Welsh Show - Builth
At the Royal Welsh Show in Builth in 2009 Elements Europe exhibited a Code Level 4 Ty Unnos house with 2 Bedrooms. The exhibit was finished to a high standard and used to demonstrate a range of modular housing available for sale in 2010.
