Transforming an undervalued resource into value-added products
In the broadleaf woodlands of Wales there is a sizeable quantity of small diameter trees (6" - 12" diameter) which are being or could be harvested sustainably in order to improve the quality of the woodland.
These trees have been perceived to have little value and are generally pulped or used as firewood, or remain unharvested.
At Coed Cymru we have helped develop methods of milling the resulting logs, which yield standard boards of 4" x 1", generally 4' in length and of mixed quality.
Because this dimension and quality of timber is unappealing to the traditional woodusing industry it has been necessary to develop ways of utilising the standard stock - the aim being to convert it to products which will have a higher value than pulp or firewood.
Although short length strip flooring has proved an ideal and commercially successful vector for the timber it was always felt that there was potential for its use in a wider variety of products including more sophisticated and perhaps more value-added products.
To this end we have devised a system of construction using interlocking components that form simple engineering profiles which have solid appearance and are strong but relatively light. These and the resulting products have been christened The Welsh Angle.
An important feature is that products are simple to manufacture and can utilise low cost machinery. Thus they are ideal not just for established manufacturers but also for farmers wishing to diversify and employees of sheltered workshops who might not be highly skilled in woodworking.
Ranges of furniture - for the office, garden, kitchen, workshop and bedroom - have been developed in our own workshop and in collaboration with manufacturers. These have been well received by the public at Coed Cymru shows and exhibitions and are already being taken up by manufacturers.
The Welsh Angle initiative is encouraging good practice in the woodlands, income for growers and timber processors and training opportunities for disadvantaged groups in society. We foresee Welsh Angle becoming the trademark for a revitalised hardwood industry in Wales but for the time being it satisfies fully the social, environmental and economic definitions of Sustainable Development.
